Districts' Diabetes Support
LIONS NEW ZEALAND DISTRICT 202F SUPPORTING DIABETES RESEARCH
District 202F had been holding funds raised for Diabetes, by Clubs in their District, due to a previous research project which didn’t proceed.
A decision was made to donate those funds for Diabetes Research to the Edgar Diabetes & Obesity Research, a University of Otago Research Centre, and as a result the District was named as one of the co‐sponsors of the "100 Years of Insulin" 1/2‐day Diabetes symposium held 24th November 2022 at the Grand Hall Parliament buildings Wellington. This event advocated for funding of life-saving diabetes technologies, which have subsequently been funded for those living with type 1 diabetes.
Since then, Lions district 202F have continued to support the Edgar Diabetes & Obesity Research Centre, and has helped to fund important research projects related to type 1 diabetes and youth: https://www.otago.ac.nz/diabetes/more-news-at-edor/diabetes-research-garners-support
Lions 202F donations have contributed to:
The Co-Pilot trial, which investigated whether new diabetes technology was safe for youth struggling to manage their diabetes.
The pathways of care for youth with type 1 diabetes project interviewed youth with type 1 diabetes, and health care professionals, to understand if recent funding changes to diabetes technologies are helping the people who need it most, and to identify where youth need more support with nutrition. Findings from this project are being extended to the development of resources to help youth with managing their type 1 diabetes, specifically during the transition from home into independent living.
