Maurice and Heather Carthew enjoyed a double celebration when they headed off to Tonga on a short holiday to celebrate their 25th Wedding Anniversary.
Knowing that there was now a Lions Club in Tonga and not being one to miss an opportunity to meet fellow members, Maurice [president of Onerahi Lions Club] emailed his travel plans to the new Club President, Vanessa Heleta, and was delighted to get a quick response offering to meet up once they got there.
Though based at a resort on an off-shore island, a few days after they arrived Maurice and Heather travelled to Nuku’alofa by boat to meet up with Vanessa at a local café.
Over a good coffee they heard all about the new club and about the Charter celebrations last year that PDG Huck Taingahue (amongst others) had attended. They took the opportunity to present Vanessa with an Onerahi Club banner and a photo book of Whangarei.
“We had a great time in the Kingdom; the Tongan people were friendly and our resort was wonderfully relaxing. Vanessa insisted on meetingup with us again on our last day to take us for a short tour of the main island as well as sharing some of the history and local customs,” Heather said.
“The ordinary Tongans are very poor by our standards and we could see that joining the Lions International family will give Tongan Lions a lot of support to be able to help in their own communities. We hope to go back in the not too distant future and will be keeping in contact with our new friend.”
