The Spirit of New Zealand tall ship sailed out of Wellington Harbour on Wednesday morning, 30 January, on its annual “Inspiration Voyage” - a five day voyage for 30 young people with physical disabilities.
Just prior to its departure from Queens Wharf, members of the Lions Club of Karori handed over a cheque for $22,000 to the Chief Executive of the Spirit of Adventure Trust, Dean Lawrence.
Karori Lions co-ordinate an annual appeal amongst Lions Clubs throughout New Zealand to support this annual voyage. During the 12 years this programme has been running, New Zealand Lions have donated over $200,000, enabling more than three hundred physically challenged young men and women, aged between 16 and 20 years, to have an experience of a lifetime.
The emphasis of this programme is to provide opportunities to the young people to face challenges outside their usual boundaries, gaining confidence and achieving things that they previously would have thought to be impossible for them. It has been transformational and life-changing for so many of them.
