St John Ambulance Taranaki now has four ‘CombiCarriers’ thanks to a donation of $9500 from New Plymouth Pakeke Lions Club.
The CombiCarrier is a specialised carrying device which enables the movement of spinal injured patients as well as the general rescue and carrying of patients. They replace aged steel scoop stretchers. Ian May, District Operation Manager – Taranaki, says the carrier is a frequently used piece of medical kit and has a quick strapping system enabling difficult terrain rescues. He says given that St John attended 1955 falls/back injuries in the last 12 months in Taranaki, with just over 1000 being emergency calls, it gives an indication of the value of this piece of gear.
Past President Jack Hawkes said members were unanimous in their decision to choose St John as their 2012 recipient of a major donation. They were pleased to have been able to support the good work of St John and it was particularly satisfying in their 30th year to make this donation.
