Christchurch reading scheme getting back to business

ARAS – the Adult Reading Assistance Scheme (Christchurch) Inc, is a not-for-profit organisation that provides adult literacy and numeracy assistance on a one-to-one and/or small group basis, at no direct cost to the student, and without discrimination on the basis of race, gender, beliefs, socio-economic level, class or culture.

For almost three years ARAS has operated in temporary premises on the outskirts of Christchurch, having lost their inner-city base in the February 2011 earthquake.

After three patient years of searching ARAS is relocating back to the central city which will ensure the groups and individuals needing support can travel by easy transport to meet with the voluntary tutors.

ARAS approached the Lions District Earthquake Committee to assist with relocation expenses, and now that new premises have been secured Lions have provided a cheque from the earthquake fund to assist the shift.

PDG Mary Griffiths, PDG Phil Lynch ( Chairman, District Earthquake Committee), and  Maureen Vance  (ARS Manager).
