According to his doctors, Andrew Walklin should have been dead about six years ago.

Cystic fibrosis claimed the life of his older brother and has left the Wellington man on kidney dialysis and a daily cocktail of pills to stay alive.

Hundreds of children, their families and their teddy bears over-ran Wanganui's Kowhai Park for some fun in the sun yesterday.

The renovated toilets were opened by Wanganui Mayor Michael Laws, and children had a teddy bears' picnic  at the combined Wanganui District Council and Wanganui Lions' Club event.

A joint project between Westfield St Lukes Shopping Mall and the Lions Club of Blockhouse Bay has led to $7,626.10 being donated to Heart Children New Zealand Inc. in February. The funds were raised from donations from generous shoppers during the gift wrapping service at Westfield St Lukes Shopping Mall over the Christmas period.

Life as a Guide Dog proved too stressful for Oamaru poodle Finley, but she seemed happy to provide entertainment for collectors on Friday. The two-year-old standard poodle, and her owner Pat Fox, joined members of the Waiareka Valley Lions Club, collecting money for the annual Red Puppy Appeal at the South Hill New World.
