On 14th January 2016 Waikanae Lions put on their annual dinner for the five Lions Clubs in the Kapiti area and their recipients for the Book Fair.  Peter Cresswell was the MC for the night.  The Guest Speaker was Joe Asghar talking about the challenges of non-profit for Non-Governmental Organistions (NGOs).

The Lions have been putting on the Book Fair for 17 years, and in that time we have raised over $500,000 for our nominated charities.  This success would not have happened if it weren't for the support of the 5 clubs, and greatly supported by the public.  There is a big box in front of Coastlands Mall which the public donate their books throughout the year, Lions collect them and maintain the box until mid October when we take them to the Waikanae Memorial Hall to sell over the Saturday & Sunday.

Kapakapanui Lions charities were Denis Wood with The Shed Project & Helen Cook with the Community Patrol.  The Shed Project is an organisation which was set up in Paraparaumu by Denis to train and give opportunities for employment for local disadvantaged and disabled people.  He teaches them how to make wooden goods and sell them over TradeMe.  They also operate a book exchange and charity store where they sell donated items and books.  They have won an award as the Rising Star category and they are also finalists for the Wellington Airport Regional Community Awards.

The Community Patrol goes out into the public and help the police by keeping an eye out for trouble and help to maintain it.
