Heroic Fastway driver saves toddler's life

Friday 2nd March 2012

Heads Up for Kids' official courier sponsor, Fastway Couriers, not only support New Zealand’s youth, they save their lives too.

Fastway courier Dennis Roderick has been called an ‘angel’ by locals after he saved a toddler attempting to cross four lanes of traffic on State Highway 1.

Mr Roderick, 61, was driving along Mana Esplanade, north of Porirua, about 10.30am on Thursday when he saw the 16-month-old boy just metres in front of him.

The grandfather of seven swung his 20-metre truck around to block the toddler from on-coming traffic. Then, racing from his vehicle he removed the toddler from harm’s way and reunited him with his fretful parents.
