As Lions Clubs International which was formed in 1917 is this year celebrating 100 years of Service the new BBQ has been dedicated as being our Club’s Centennial Project. The Bucklands Beach Lions Club was formed in 1976 so this project also celebrates our Clubs 40th Anniversary.

Following the very successful Tree Project selling off surplus stock from the Big Tree Company the Club set aside $8,500 to fund a major community project in our area.

Discussions were held with the local Community Board and the need for a community BBQ at the Eastern Beach picnic area was identified. The Auckland Council undertook the role of organising the supply and installation of an electric BBQ. Our Club was able to gain support from

The Lloyd Morgan Lions Clubs Charitable Trust which supports Lion’s projects throughout New Zealand and they contributed $5,000 towards the cost giving us $13,500 in total. Auckland Council agreed that it would be a joint project with them and that they would cover the balance of the cost. They were also upgrading the whole picnic area with new toilets and picnic tables. Planning and approvals for the whole upgrade took quite some time.

The new BBQ is now installed and to celebrate and christen this new facility the Club organised a formal opening last Saturday where sausages, onion and Bacon & Eggs were cooked and enjoyed by those present. Apart from Club Members our District Vice Governor Wendy Miller and Region Chairman Ricky Singh also joined in our celebration.

The BBQ proudly carries our Lions’ Plaque acknowledging our Club’s involvement along with the support received from our Lions Trust. We thank the Auckland Council and the Local Community Board and their staff who contributed greatly in making this project possible. We hope also that the local community will value and take advantage of this new facility.

Also a second defibrillator was to Z Frankton. They were pleased to receive the defibrillator as they are so used to giving funds back to community projects.
