The Lions Club of Tawa was chartered on 16 February 1966 and currently has a membership of more than 28 members. Our club is a mixed gender club from Young to Young at Heart and our objective is to serve the Tawa community by upholding the principles on which Lions Clubs International was founded.

Tawa is the northern-most friendly community of Wellington, the nation’s capital city. The area is predominantly residential with associated shopping and service facilities, good schooling and light to medium industry.

An important part of serving the community is fund raising starting with our weekly Saturday Tawa Lions Market at Outlet City, Tawa.

Tawa Memorial - A 2017 Centennial Year Project for the Lions Club of Tawa.

The Tawa Memorial, a project initiated by The Tawa Historical Society, was unveiled on April 22, 2017. In attendance at the official ceremony were Ohariu MP Peter Dunne, The Wellington Mayor Justin Lester and Wellington Councillor Malcolm Sparrow plus representatives from all funding contributors, including the Lions Club of Tawa. Speeches were made by Mayor Justin Lester and Air Vice Marshall Kevin Short of the RNZAF.

The Tawa Historical Society planning for the memorial started in 2008 and final funding approval was successful in 2016 with tremendous support from community organisations, businesses and volunteers. Everyone worked very hard to have the memorial completed by Anzac Day 2017.

The memorial is located at the end of Oxford Street, adjacent to the Grasslees reserve. It provides a focal point to acknowledge the sacrifice of the thirteen Tawa soldiers who gave their lives while serving in the Boar war and the two great World Wars. Included in the thirteen names are two soldiers buried abroad – William Clachan and Milton Mexted, whose names and memories, along with the other eleven, are now all recorded on The Tawa Memorial.

The Lions Club of Tawa contributed $10,000 to this very worthy Tawa Historical Society project and this donation was identified as Tawa Lions 2017 Centennial Project for Lions International 100 year world wide Centennial celebration.

Anzac Day 25 April commemorates New Zealanders killed in the theatres of war and honours all returned servicemen and women “ Lest we forget “.
