DG Lorna’s Lines.....

I’ve now been sworn in as your District Governor.  While in Chicago I took the opportunity to visit our Head Office at Oak Brook.  The building has a beautiful Japanese garden to one side, landscaped sitting area, a statue depicting Knights of the Blind and Lions statues at each side of the entrance.  As they were expecting an influx of visitors (being the centenary celebration) commentaries via headsets led us around the various departments and displays, while staff were on hand to answer questions.  To me it seemed a relatively small staff considering the number of Districts/Clubs they look after throughout the world.  We were also able to search the register of names re LCIF awards.  Staff are lovely people – all so willing to assist in any and every way they can.  Likewise during the Convention itself there were numerous booths and display areas.  Staff and volunteers deserve a huge thank you for the planning and attention to detail throughout the ten days of DG training and Convention.  Our new world president, Dr Naresh Aggarwal & wife Navita are Indian so we were treated to some traditional tribal entertainment during the Convention.

It might be changing times but the humanitarian needs are as great as ever – as Lions we are being called upon to respond.  Our challenge is to collectively serve two million people per year by 2020.  Can we do it?  I hope so.

LCI Forward provides the framework for service under six themes:  Environment;  Diabetes;  Vision;  Paediatric Cancer;  Hunger;  and  Youth.  This doesn’t mean we abandon existing service or successful projects, but to look for further opportunities within our respective communities To Serve.

I hope most club presidents can attend the follow-up training session on 29th in Timaru prior to our President’s dinner – I look forward to meeting presidents there.

It is mid-winter and cold but it’s also beautiful looking out and walking in a white winter wonderland here in Lake Tekapo (6” of snow, 13 July).  Take care driving and keep warm.

DG Lorna
